Looking for great golf outing venues in Delaware? Awesome! While it may not be widely known to many outside the area, Delaware is a beautiful place for virtually any sort of special event. It’s an ideal backdrop for meetings, weddings, banquets, social events, and more.

With state parks all over, golf outings in Delaware enjoy an enviable amount of space and a backdrop that can’t be easily forgotten.

As spacious and as perfect a place as it is for enjoying the outdoors, southern Delaware plays host to a number of premier golf courses that are the envy of courses everywhere. Those looking for a unique place to play golf, or even learn to play golf for the first time would be hard-pressed to find a better backdrop for a game.

It’s strange to think how much time and money go into golf each year when you consider that a short hundred or so years ago in 1900, there were only an estimated 1,000 golf clubs in the country. If you think golf seems to be a quality associated with money or high class now, you should have seen the national perception of the sport in the early 1900’s.

It’s easy to see why and how golf got popular. While some joke about the presence of a golf cart, it is actually quite a physically intense and gratifying sport, and an effective exercise if engaged in fully.

A man weighing about 175 lbs. can be expected to burn almost 500 calories per golf outing if he’s carrying his own clubs. On a typical nine-hole course, a golfer might walk almost 2.5 miles. That’s quite a bit of exercise for any individual, especially someone who might be thought of as a taker of shortcuts, thanks to the stigma surrounding the use of motorized carts in the sport. A player may only have 14 clubs in their bag at one time, however, making the 500 calories per outing something of an “at most” estimate.

Golfing is more than a way to pass the time. The social, athletic, and aesthetic components of the sport result in an activity which provides a number of important mental and physical health benefits. Thanks to the low-impact nature of the sport, there are few ages at which people cannot enjoy this fun and healthy activity. Folks who attend a golf club can expect to enjoy the following important benefits:

  1. Well-being as facilitated by social involvement: Humans are social creatures. We crave group activities and events, whether in the form of a competition or simply as recreation. Joining a golf club provides community and a sense of belonging as you get to know the familiar faces who spend time there. Whether at a Sunday brunch, a special event, or simply out on the green, there are plenty of places to make new friends and grow your support system.
  2. A thorough workout: As any golfer will tell you, swinging a metal club over and over again to hit a ball vast distances is no easy task. While not overly taxing to any specific joint, this activity ends up working out most of the muscles in the body. To make the strength training even more complete, carry your own bag. A golf bag with a complete set of clubs typically weighs an impressive 30 pounds.
  3. High caloric expenditure: 18-hole golf courses promote a higher metabolic rate simply by virtue of their length. A full round on a Smyrna golf course involves walking five to six miles. Add in the hills which many courses involve and the up to 14 clubs a player can have in their bag and you have a serious test of endurance. In Deerfield Golf Club in Newark, Delaware, golfers have 145 acres of beautiful grounds to explore.
  4. Balance of mental engagement and relaxation: A premier golf course provides opportunities both to hone one’s mental acuity and to enjoy the rejuvenating aspects of natural scenery. Golfers must make such calculations as estimations of distance, decisions on which club to use, compensation for the wind, and more. They do this, though, while immersed in a scenic location which naturally boosts serotonin.

Whatever your age and abilities, you can benefit from the beauty and the challenges of golfing, so do not wait — get out of the house and onto a course today!

5/6/20 – Golf & Golf Outing Update At Garrisons Lake

Garrisons Lake is still open for golf only (one person per gas cart beginning Friday 5/8/20, DE residents only), with all events and golf outings now postponed through Thursday June 11, 2020.  We are hopeful to reopen for outings/events – even if somehow limited with guidelines not determined yet – on Friday June 12th.  Our General Manager is working diligently with clients whose dates may have been impacted to resolve this evolving situation with the best solutions possible.

  • Garrisons Lake is currently limited to Delaware Residents Only and one golfer per cart – no caddies are permitted.  You are also welcome to walk and carry or push your own cart.  All social distancing guidelines and expectations remain in effect.  There can be no accommodation for “same household” guests based on the Governor’s most recent modification.  Due to limited golf carts, carts are available on a first come first served basis and cannot be guaranteed.  We will do everything possible to make a golf cart available to you as quickly as possible, and have modified the tee sheet to help maximize cart availability.
  • You are still required to wear a mask during pro shop check-in, and wherever social distancing standards of 6+ feet cannot be maintained.  You are further required to maintain all appropriate 6+ feet of social distancing on the course at all times throughout the round.  Not adhering to these standards will lead to you being asked to leave the property.  We will be circulating team members roughly once per hour during prime time to assist guests who may need to be reminded or require assistance.
  • Garrisons Lake is still accepting touchless payment with credit card or pre-paid only for golf, please (no cash)
  • Merchandise purchases essential for play is permitted (touchless credit card only) but the Pro Shop will be closed to unnecessary shopping among non-golfers
  • All social distancing standards must be followed in the Pro Shop (the floor is marked for your convenience) with ONE GUEST in the Pro Shop at a time.
  • The driving range and putting green are open (social distancing of 6+ feet always for safety)
  • Lessons will continue but only on an individual basis where all social distancing standards of 6+ feet are maintained.
  • Packaged snacks and soft drinks are available in the Pro Shop (no cash – just touchless credit card purchases, please).
  • You are not permitted to bring alcoholic beverages onto the property.
  • As before, cups have been modified to reduce contact points – rakes and ball-washers are removed – no touching of flagsticks, please
  • We will not be able to provide a pencil or a scorecard – we recommend printing one HERE or printing from our website prior to your round
  • You may call the Pro Shop with questions, but we strongly advise you access for the latest tee time availability and information or you may email us at
